Phab Club (People Have ABilities)

Oxford Phab is an active social club which has been meeting on Friday evenings at Wesley Memorial since 1981. It is registered charity, affiliated to Phab England, and, as the name suggests, provides the opportunity for disabled and non-disabled members, both children and adults to come together on equal terms for a wide range of social and sports activities.

Club evenings include quizzes, crafts, films and parties. Outside events include:

  • excursions to West End Musicals, bowling and socials at nearby Phab clubs;
  • visits to outdoor adventure centres for climbing, abseiling, archery, drumming, circus skills, karaoke;
  • weekends away to Blackpool illuminations, steam railways, camps etc.

All these activities promote self-reliance and enhance the living skills of young people to achieve complete inclusion within the wider community. And the links to Wesley Mem are strong: one member wrote:

`It brings a group of friends together under one roof.
I think that the church has become part of Phab and Phab has become part of the church.'

Oxford Phab will benefit from the improved access to Wesley Mem from the street and the refurbishment of the John Wesley Room and the greater flexibility of the use of the existing space.
