Open Doors Redevelopment Project - the aims

The primary aim of the project is to adapt our buildings to the needs of the next generation in the centre of Oxford, under the banner 'Open to God, Open to all'.

These developments will create facilities for the congregation and the staff, and for the community and the city, which are more welcoming, hospitable and flexible.

Welcoming: we want to encourage outsiders to come into the buildings and to discover what is on offer inside. The plans allow for:

  • better visibility from the street and easier access to the premises;
  • a welcoming reception area with displays and an informal meeting area; and
  • improved disabled access throughout.

Hospitable: we want to extend the hand of friendship and to create a place of 'encounter, friendship, belonging and hope' for our neighbours through:

  • the refitted 'blue' kitchen with serving hatches into the John Wesley Room and reception area;
  • the greatly expanded 'green' kitchen;
  • the new serving hatch into the hall.

Flexible: we want to enhance the current facilities whilst allowing for new ideas and developments in the future. These features include:

  • the refurbished John Wesley Room;
  • the upgraded hall with improved layout and storage facilities;
  • an additional multi-purpose space with glazed panels overlooking the Hall.

Partnership with Christian Aid

Renewal of the premises is only one strand of the vision for Open Doors.

We are also taking this opportunity to deepen the church's awareness of its mission and give a practical focus to our membership of the World Church.

We are aiming to give five percent of all voluntary donations and local fundraising to Christian Aid, initially for its work in Burkina Faso, West Africa. We will, therefore, also be helping an estimated 88,000 people to adapt to the challenges of climate change through the project to set up community market gardens, and provide seeds, loans and training. Even better, the European Union has promised to quadruple any donations we make to the Burkina Faso project!
